We plan whole traditional neighbourhoods: the street network and its hierarchy, blocks and plots, squares and public space, and the mix of uses that keeps a place busy through the day.
We also distribute ornament levels across a place. Backstreets might be Proportional, main streets Moulded, and the town hall, the school or the church Sculptural. The richness of the decoration follows the importance of each street and building, as it does in many of the best-loved historic towns. It also puts the budget where it will be seen most.
Masterplanning is for developers of large sites, and for municipalities planning a new district or the renewal of an old one. A masterplan works well with a design code, which keeps the place coherent while it is built over many years.
